Cuttack: The SCB Medical College and Hospital here today witnessed an unruly scene after a group of junior doctors (PG), allegedly beat up attendants of a patient for not complying with their order to vacate a bed in the Orthopedics department.

The three attendants, identified as Pradyumna Rout, Krushan Mohan Das and Kumudini Ray, sustained injuries on face and neck in the attack. They are being interrogated at the SCB police outpost after their medical examination at district headquarters Hospital.

Kubera Chandra Ray of Gop in Puri district, who had met with an accident 20 days ago, was admitted to the Orthopedic ward of the hospital. However, citing no reasons, two junior doctors today allegedly forced Kubera’s wife Kumudini and other relatives to vacate the bed following which an altercation ensued. Irked, the junior physicians along with some fellow doctors attacked them after locking them up in a room, Kumudini alleged.

“When they asked me to vacate the bed, I approached them to wait till arrival of my relatives. When my father and one of his aides came and wanted to know the reason of shifting, the doctors got into an altercation and attacked them. I was also heckled while protesting the act”, Kumudini said.

A case has been registered against eight junior doctors at Mangalabag police station for indulging in the violent activities in the hospital ward.

The hospital authorities, however, refused to comment on the issue.
