New Delhi: The Selvam Trust on Monday informed the Supreme Court it had deposited Rs 2 crore in the court registry as per its earlier directive.
The Trust informed the apex court during a hearing of the case by a two-Judge bench.
The apex court will have the next hearing of the case in the second week of August.
During the last hearing of the case on May 9 this year, a two-judge bench of Justice Deepak Mishra and Justice C Nagappan had directed the Trust to deposit Rs 2 crore in the court’s registry on or before June 25. In the event of Selvam failing to deposist the money by the stipulated date, a non-bailable warrant (NBW) would be issued against its promoters, the bench had warned.
The bench had asked the Trust to deposit Rs 2 crore as a security to ensure the future of the students, who have taken admission in Sardar Rajas Medical College at Jaring in Kalahandi district, which is presently managed by the Trust.
On April 19 this year, the apex court had asked the Trust to deposit Rs 2 crore as it had failed to establish a functional medical college. But instead of depositing the amount, the Trust had filed a petition for modification of the order and sought time to file an affidavit on the issue. The court, however, had turned down its request with a reminder to deposit the said amount within the specified time frame.
Notably, the Trust had entered into an agreement with the Western Odisha Development Council in 2014 to set up the medical college at Jaring in Kalahandi district. Though the Trust had established the medical college after receiving Rs 20 crore in aid and 25 acres of land from the Odisha government and admitted students, the Medical Council of India (MCI) did not agree to give recognition to the institute on the ground of inadequate infrastructure.
