Bhubaneswar: A sacked home guard of the Commissionerate Police attempted self-immolation by setting himself on fire near the Naveen Nivas here last night.

The home guard, Sandeep Hati, came from Palas Palli area here, attempted to commit suicide by pouring kerosene on him and setting himself ablaze. When he started running towards the Naveen Nivas, security personnel who were on duty took hold of him in unconscious condition. Bhubaneswar DCP, SP and other senior police officers rushed to the spot and sent him to the Capital Hospital here. He was later shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack today as his condition deteriorated. Sources said Hati was sacked by the Commissionerate Police three years back on some grounds, which is suspected to be the reason behind his suicide bid.

“Hati had sustained around 70 per cent born injures. We conducted preliminary treatment and sent them to the burn unit at the SCB in Cuttack,” said Dr Dwarikanath Satpathy of the Capital Hospital.

Hati alleged that he was vindictively sacked by the Commissionerate Police three years back for participating in a rally against the then Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Nitinjeet Singh seeking justice to another home guard. Hati said a home guard at the former DCP house had served hot ‘Kheer’ to the wife of Singh. But she threw the hot ‘Kheer’ in the face of the home guard in anger. As Hati spoke about the incident in front of their association, he was later sacked from his job in vindication.

On the other hand, DGP KB Singh said he would hold discussion with the Commissionerate police in this regard and the matter would be investigated. Besides, the inquiry would also examine under what circumstances Hati entered into the strong security ring of the Chief Minister, said the DGP. Meanwhile, Commissioner YB Khurania met injured the guard at the SCB hospital and assured that the State government will bear all the medical expenses. He said the inquiry would also examine the grounds, on the basis of which Hati was suspended from his job.
