Rourkela: An under-treatment nine-day-old infant, who had sustained severe burn injuries after a major fire mishap at the newborn ward of Om Appolo Hospital in Rourkela on Saturday, succumbed today at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.
The infant identified as the son of one Manoj Das, a resident of Deogaon area of Rourkela, was admitted to Om Apollo Hospital in Civil Township area of the steel city for treatment of Jaundice.
Keeping in view the palpable tension in the village after the death of the newborn, police forces have been deployed near Om Appolo hospital to prevent any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, locals have staged a dharna in front of the hospital demanding compensation to the family members of the deceased baby.
During wee hours on February 17, the baby sustained critical burn injuries after the bulb of the photo therapy machine in which he was kept for treatment, exploded and caught fire.
Even though the authorities of the hospital swung into action and doused the flames, the infant had already suffered nearly 80 percent injuries. He was initially rushed to IGH Rourkela and later transferred to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.
