Bhubaneswar: Odisha Building & Other Construction Workers' Welfare Board has decided to increase the renewal period of the construction workers from one to three years.

Addressing a press conference, board chairman Subash Singh informed that the registration of the beneficiaries working under the board has been made mandatory as per the Sec.12 of the Building & Other Construction Workers' Act. The registration will be carried out as per section 7 of the Construction Workers' Act, he added.

The decision of the board will be a boost for the registered workers especially those who are working outside the State. This apart, the engineers of all the departments has been empowered to collect one percent cess. This rule will be strictly followed in the matter of various schemes of the government, Singh pointed out.

The engineers can register the labourers working directly under them or under the contractors.

Singh also informed that pucca houses will be built in five big cities of the State under Housing Scheme to provide shelter to workers residing in urban areas. Initially, the low-cost houses will be constructed in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Rourkela and Sambalpur, he added.
