Cuttack: Students of Ravenshaw University today staged demonstration in front of the Vice-Chancellor (VC) and Cuttack DCP office protesting the arrest of one fellow student by police on charges of beating up a youth here on Monday.

The students claimed police have arrested an innocent student, a Plus III second year student Anshuman Mohanty, who has no hand in the alleged torturing of a youth inside Lalitgiri hostel premises.

Claiming Mohanty's innocence, the students' group first protested in front of the VC office who tried to calm them down stating that police are investigating the incident and as per the findings, they would take further action.

Unsatisfied with the reply of the VC, the students then took their agitation to the Cuttack DCP office.

Later in the day, the Cuttack SDJM court granted bail to Mohanty directing him not to get involved in similar incidents.

Earlier on Monday, a youth had lodged a complaint with Malgodown police against 10 students of the varsity for allegedly torturing him over past enmity.

While the police have so far arrested only Mohanty in connection with the case, other accused in the case are still at large.
