Puri: Delanga rape, murder accused 'Psycho killer’ Buddhadeb Behera was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition after he attempted suicide inside Nimapara sub-jail here in the wee hours on Monday.

According to reports, Buddhadeb is suspected to have cut his hands and other parts with the help of a blade or any other sharp object at around 2 am. After the jail authorities spotted him lying in a pool of blood, he was first shifted to Nimapara and later to Puri hospital.

However, as Buddhadeb’s condition deteriorated due to excess bleeding, he was then shifted to SCB in Cuttack.

Earlier, police on August 16 had arrested Buddhadeb Behera, a 31-year-old labour contractor, for allegedly raping and murdering a woman in a forest at Delanga of Puri district on August 2.

The deceased woman, who was raped and killed by Buddhadeb, was identified as Anita Nayak (27) of Kajuri village under Raikia police limits in Kandhamal district.

Behera, a native of Deogarh, was working in Andhra Pradesh and was earlier involved in similar crimes in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

In 2012, Buddhadeb was arrested in a case of rape and murder and was lodged in jail. But in the same year, he complained of leg pain and was taken to a hospital in Deogarh from where he escaped.
