Bhubaneswar: The Railway Ministry has decided to shelve the proposed wagon factory at Sitalapalli in Ganjam district.

As wagon production is surplus in the country, there is no need for a new wagon factory, revealed the reply furnished by the Railway Board in response to a Right to Information (RTI) query filed by applicant Hemanta Kumar Panda of Bolangir.

Panda had filed a similar RTI in 2016 before the Railway Board.

Bhrugu Baxipatra, general secretary of Odisha BJP, said, “Work on the proposed wagon factory at Sitalapalli under East Coast Railway has been cancelled for the time being. However, if the demand for wagons increases in future, the Sitalapalli factory project will get a priority.”

The factory was announced in 2011-12 by the then Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee. Implementation of the project was doubtful since then due to allocation of meagre funds for the project.

In 2016 Railway Budget, a token amount of Rs 1,000 was allocated for the manufacturing unit.

Moreover, in 2017 Budget, the ministry did not sanction any amount for the proposed wagon factory.

The proposed project was supposed to be implemented in a public-private partnership (PPP) mode.

The Odisha government had identified around 101 acres for the project Railway ministry.
