Bhubaneswar: A girl student of a city-based medical college here was allegedly raped by a peon of the college last night. Police detained the accused and are interrogating him.

Sources said Manoj Khatua, a peon of the Hi-Tech Medical College and Hospital, allegedly raped a first year student after taking her into his room on the campus.

College Chairman Dr Tirupati Panigrahi said, "The incident that occurred at around 7.30 pm yesterday came to the light at around 12 pm. The girl did not know the peon's  name. We identified the accused and handed him over to the police."

Both are currently under police custody. "We will fully cooperate with police in the investigation, Besides police action, the accused will be suspended from the job," he added.

Meanwhile, the accused has refuted the allegation and made a shocking statement.

Khatua alleged that he found the girl in a compromising position with a male  student and a doctor in the campus last night.

"I warned them that I would bring the matter to the notice of the college principal next morning. However, the trio apologized and pleaded me not to disclose the matter before anyone," Khatua said.
