Jeypore: While both the Central government and the state governments are busy launching scheme after scheme for safe and secure delivery for pregnant women, women and babies continue to die because of the failure to ensure timely delivery of these services.

A case of this kind was reported from Jeypore area in the tribal dominated Kopraput district, where the 102-ambulance did not arrive in time to take a pregnant woman to hospital causing her death.

The deceased has been identified as Moina Penthia of Barangapadara village under Baipariguda block.

According to sources, Moina felt labour pain on Wednesday morning. Anusuya Das, an Asha worker attending on her, called several times to 102-ambulance service to take her to hospital but in vain.

Finding no other option, Anusuya took Moina to the nearby community health centre by an autorickshaw. But when her health condition deteriorated, the doctors advised the Asha worker to shift Moina to Jeypore sub divisional hospital. But Moina died on the way to Jeypore hospital, the sources added.

Anusuya Das, Asha worker. said, “When I called the 102 ambulance service, they said they are sending an ambulance but they did not send any. Finding no other option I took her to medical by an autorickshaw. She died on her way to Jeypore hospital.”

Doctor Padmalochana Mahanta said, “We received the lady at around 5 pm and she was brought dead.”
