Nayagarh: In another heartbreaking incident mocking the healthcare facilities in the rural areas, a pregnant woman was carried on a cot for more than one kilometer through dilapidated roads to board an ambulance in Rathipur village of the district on Sunday.

The woman, Durpaj Nayak's wife, a resident of Rathipur Mathasahi village in Takara Panchayat under Dasapalla block complained of labour pain today morning following which Durpaj called 108 ambulance services.

According to reports, the 108 ambulance from Dasapalla could not make it to the village due to the pathetic condition of the village road and was stationed at a distance of one kilometer from the house of Durpaj Nayak.

With no other option left, the family members along with some villagers carried her on a cot attached to a bamboo pole to reach ambulance.

From there, the expectant mother was taken to a nearby hospital and her condition is stated to be stable.

“We faced a lot of difficulty to bring her here. The ambulance was stationed away from village. We had to carry her through village road and cross the canal. 108 ambulance was waiting on main road about 1.5 kms away from our house,” said Drupaj.

Frequent cases of expectant mothers facing such problems have raised questions on the poor healthcare services and also the road connectivity to avail an ambulance in the interior areas.
