Bhubaneswar: BJP state vice-president Sameer Mohanty on Friday said results of the first and second phase polling of the ongoing three-tier panchayat polls have left the ruling BJD red-faced. He stated that the ruling party is in shock over the overwhelming response of the voters who wanted a change in the State leadership.

Mohanty told this while addressing the media on the attack on senior party leader Pratap Sarangi’s vehicle at Nilagiri block in Balasore district on Thursday night.

He said, “The election results have stunned the ruling BJD and have left the party MLAs and leaders red-faced. They are still in shock. This has happened for the first time in the last 20 years.”

He alleged that the police has become a mute spectator and a puppet in the hands of the State government.

The BJD MLAs and leaders have attacked BJP candidates and activists at Dasamantpur in Jajpur and Bhatli in Bargarh district. While the BJD has taken the law into its own hand, the police and district administration have remained mute spectators only, Mohanty stated.

Talking about the attack on party leader’s vehicle, Mohanty said the incident that occurred just a day before the third-phase panchayat poll has posed a threat to Sarangi’s life. However, the BJD’s attempt to suppress the public opinion is only going to worsen the situation, he added.

BJD spokesperson Sashibhusan Behera, after the completion of the third phase panchayat elections today, said the overall show of the party has so far been better than rivals.

“The BJP is yet to open its account in as many as 10 districts. The numbers may vary a bit compared to the previous panchayat polls but at the same time, it is ahead of the rivals by a big margin,” he stated.
