Police-villagers face-off during protest against Kanas tehsildar

Puri: Tension prevailed during a protest by Kanas Nagarika Manch demanding immediate transfer of the tehsildar.

According to reports, a scuffle ensued between the agitators and police after the former tried to storm into the tehsildar’s office by breaking security barricades that were put up by cops keeping in view the demonstration today.

The Kanas Nagarika Manch has been staging a ‘Satyagraha’ from December 15 to press for several demands that included transfer of the official and resolving other irregularities at the tehsil office.

Sources said few employees of the tehsil and villagers are at logger heads over a clash that occurred earlier this month.

Keeping in view the demonstration, adequate measures were taken by police and administration to maintain law and order.

However, palpable tension still prevails in the region after police detained 50 demonstrators in connection with the unrest and violating prohibitory orders today.
