Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police Thursday said investigation is on against builder and movie producer Niranjan Rana under Sec 6 of the Odisha Protection of Interests of Depositors Act (OPID) and it will write to the Home department soon to begin the process for confiscation of his properties.
Talking to media persons, Satyabrata Bhoi, Bhubaneswar DCP, said, “Investigation is on under Sec 6 of OPID Act and his bank accounts seized.” "If any fresh charge is levelled against him, that too will be investigated," he said.
The DCP further stated the Commissionerate Police will seek the court’s permission after getting the details of Rana’s properties.
The city police have already written to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to get the details of luxury vehicles owned by Rana.
Sources said the cops will take Rana on remand to extract more information about his activities.
Meanwhile, depositors made a beeline at the Sahid Nagar police station to file complaints against Rana. Cases were registered against him for fraud amounting to more than Rs 40 lakh.
Manmath, a depositor, said, “We appeal to the State government and the concerned local administration to ensure refund of our hard-earned money. I had earned the money after working for 20 years in the Defence.”
Demanding a refund, Smitashree, another depositor, said, “We did not know he would cheat us. Otherwise we would have not given the money to him.”
“We want our hard-earned money back. If necessary, his property should be confiscated,” Smitashree added.
Notably, on June 2, Rana, managing director of Maa Tarini Eastcon Builders, was arrested by Saheed Nagar police on charges of cheating.
Rana, a well-known Odia film producer, had produced films like ‘Hari Bhai Harena’, ‘Pahili Raja’, ‘Target’, and most recently the Anubhav-Varsha starrer ‘Gote Sua Gote Sari’ among others.
