Bhubaneswar: Police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse protesting job aspirants agitating under the banner of Sikshya Sahayak Ashayi Sangha Odisha at Lower PMG in Bhubaneswar on Monday.

More than 25,000 unemployed BEd passouts and certificate in teaching (CT) holders were staging dharna at the Lower PMG demanding employment as Sikshya Sahayaks. The situation went out of control in the evening when a delegation of the association had gone to meet the School and Mass Education (S&ME) minister to present their demands.

According to sources, the agitating Sikshya Sahayak aspirants started pelting stones at police as a result of which the IIC of Capital police station and few other personnel were injured. Following which, police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the gathering and arrested more than 20 agitators.

"When their leaders had been called for a discussion, the gathering turned violent and started pelting stones on us in which the Capital Police Station IIC was injured along with a few of our personnel. They were dispersed but they returned for the second time and blocked the road. They were dispersed again and the situation is presently under control. We are keeping an eye on the situation," said Bhubaneswar DCP, Satyabrata Bhoi.

On the other hand, S&ME Minister Badri Narayan Patra said there is a delay in engagement of the Sikshya Sahayaks as the case is sub-judice in Orissa High Court. The demands of the association will be considered after a reapplication, he added.

"The advertisement for employment of Sikshya Sahayaks is sub-judice. Court has ordered that candidates who have secured 45 percent marks should also be given chance. A new advertisement will be published and they can apply again," said Patra.

It is worthwhile to mention that the aspirants have been agitating since long demanding employment as Sikshya Sahayaks as per a notification of the S&ME department dated December 26, 2016.

The notification read, "Sikshya Sahayaks (SS) will be engaged in each Revenue District by the respective Zilla Parishad by a Selection Committee to be headed by the Collector-cum-Chief Executive Officer, Zilla Parishad as Chairman and District Education Officer, all the Block Education Officers of the District, District Project Coordinator (SSA), District Employment officer and the District Welfare Officer as members."

The aspirants have been demanding publication of the draft list for engagement of Sikshya Sahayaks in the State.
