Jeypore: A sarpanch was shot dead allegedly by Maoists over suspicion of being a police informer on late Monday night at Hatibari village under Nandapur block in Koraput district.

The rebels left behind a hand written letter after committing the crime. It was seized by the police later. Some vehicles belonging to the deceased sarpanch, Jagannath Khara, were also set afire by the extremists, sources said.

According to reports, a group of armed rebels arrived at Hatibari on Monday night. They barged into his house and forcibly took him away while Khara was sleeping. No member of his family or the villagers could resist them.

A police team rushed to the spot on Tuesday morning to investigate the incident.
