New Delhi: The Supreme Court today accepted an amended application of the Odisha government challenging a section of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act under which Polavaram project was declared as a national project and asked the Andhra Pradesh govt and the Govt of India to file a reply in four weeks.

Talking to OTV, the Odisha government counsel Radheshyam said, “The apex court issued notices to the Andhra Pradesh government and the Government of India after accepting Odisha’s amended application challenging Sec 90 of the AP Reorganisation Act.”

The counsel added, “If need arises, the Odisha government will submit a rejoinder two weeks thereafter. The case will be heard again after six weeks.”

The amended petition of Odisha had also sought Chhattisgarh and Telengana should be made a party in the case.

Besides, the apex court allowed Maharashtra and Karnataka to be made parties while considering the pleas of both the State governments.

Notably, the Odisha government has been opposing Polavaram project by stating many villages of Malkangiri district will be inundated due to the multi-purpose irrigation project and knocked the doors of the Supreme Court.

The NDA government has already announced to provide financial assistance for completion of Polavaram project that was declared as a ‘national project’ when the UPA was in power.

Apart from Odisha, Telengana and Chhattisgarh are also opposing Polavaram project.
