Bhubaneswar: Taking a soft stand on the Polavaram project, Odisha today argued in favour of an amicable solution to the issue in the Supreme Court.

Gopal Subramanium, the advocate representing the State government, presented Odisha's stand in the apex court on Tuesday.

During the hearing, Odisha stressed the problems that the State will face if the Andhra Pradesh government completes the project and raised concerns over allowing the neighbouring state to increase the height of the dam.

Odisha reiterated that the project will cause a permanent injury to the interests of the State as it will face several problems, including submergence of tribal land, flooding of agricultural land and mass displacement of villagers, especially in Malkangiri district of the State. Meanwhile, the next hearing on the Polavaram issue will be held in February 2018.
