Pipili: Odisha DGP RP Sharma today reappointed former Pipli IIC Amulya Champatiray, who was dismissed in connection with the sensational Pipli gang rape case, following an order of the Supreme Court.

The DGP deputed Champatiray at the police headquarters here.

Advocate Ashok Kumar Das said upholding the High Court's order quashing the dismissal of the IIC, the Supreme Court has rejected the petition of the State government.

"Earlier, we had appraised the State government about the apex court's decision for reinstatement of Champatiray. However, the then DGP KB Singh Deo did not take any action in this regard. The incumbent DGP respected the SC's decision and reappointed Champatiray at the Puri Police Headquarters,” Das said.

Notably, Champatiray was sacked for his alleged inaction in the Pipili gang rape case in 2012 that had spread shockwaves across the country. However, he had later moved the Supreme Court challenging the State government's decision.
