Bhubaneswar: Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan today launched the Piped Natural Gas (PNG) supply project under Centre's flagship ‘Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga’ (PMUG) scheme in Odisha today.

With this, the Gas (India) Limited (GAIL) started supply of environment-friendly PNG to 255 houses in Nalco Nagar located at Chandrasekharpur area in state capital Bhubaneswar under the City Gas Distribution (CGD) project.

CGD projects in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack are being taken up concurrently with the Jagdishpur – Haldia & Bokaro – Dhamra Natural Gas Pipeline (JHBDPL) project under the PMUG scheme.

Odisha will be the biggest beneficiary of the MPUG project which aims to cover the longest stretch spanning 769 km covering 13 districts across the state.

The union minister said the initiation of the project is an important milestone in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of developing a gas-based economy and linking Eastern India to the country’s Natural Gas Grid through the PMUG scheme, which will pass through five states, i.e. Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal.

A budget of Rs 4000 crore has been earmarked for the project.

In Bhubaneshwar and Cuttack, the number of PNG connections will be gradually ramped up in the next three to five years. Moreover, 25 CNG stations will be commissioned in the twin cities to supply compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel to vehicles, Pradhan said during the launch event.

Expressing happiness at the fast pace of work, Pradhan said the project was taken up on a war-footing and the supply of the gas was launched six months before the deadline.

Citing that Centre has been able to finish the PNG project in just 7 months, Pradhan lashed out at Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik-led Odisha government for being unable to ensure drinking water to all people in the state even after being in power for 17 years.

“When we question the government they say we are spreading rumours. When on one hand they have not been able to do their duties in last 17 years; ridiculing that supply of gas has been launched to just 250 households is unwarranted,” he said.

“After all these years, still more than 40 lakh families are yet to get electricity connection,” Pradhan said.

On the other hand, the BJD came down heavily on Pradhan for criticising the government. “Pradhan should stop alleging that others are liars. The union minister should stop making big promises and prove it in work,” BJD MP Pratap Deb said.
