Rourkela: Setting a new trend, women have been made partners in launching the Pink Autorickshaws in the Steel City Rourkela here on Thursday.

As many as 21 women have been roped in to start the much awaited Pink Auto system to provide a safe and secure journey for the girls in the city.

The Pink Autorickshaw system which has already been introduced in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar was launched here on the occasion of completion of one year since Rourkela was declared a Smart City.

Battery operated three-wheelers were today handed over to the women drivers in the first phase by Sundergarh Collector V Bharadwaj and Smart City CEO Monisha Banerjee.

“Any passenger can avail the service while it will be managed by a woman driver,” said Bharadwaj.

The move is to make women self-sufficient. SBI has provided a rebate of four percent on the loan amount while Odisha government has given a subsidy of 25 percent for purchasing the vehicles.
