Rayagada: A patient was taken to hospital for treatment in a sling yet again in Kalyansinghpur area in Rayagada district.

Family members of Sikaka Dichha, a Dongaria Kondh of Paramali village in Niyamgiri area, attempted to contact the 108 ambulance service when he complained of stomach ache, but failed to get through due to poor mobile network in the area.

When the pain of Dichha became unbearable, his family members took him in a sling to Kalyansighpur Community Health Centre located 10 km away from the village. The condition of Dichha became serious after four hours of being carried in a sling and he had to be shifted to the Rayagada district hospital.

Notably, last month, a woman in labour pain in the district reached hospital in a cot as the ambulance reached late in the same Kalyansinghpur area.

Her family members said they were forced to carry her on a ‘charpoy’ after waiting for the ambulance for a long time.

The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) had registered a suo motu complaint and asked the Collector of the concerned district to submit a report within 14 days about the circumstances leading to such a deplorable situation.

The commission had also issued notice to the director of National Rural Health Mission to reply on the delay in the arrival of the ambulance.
