Koraput: Residents of Surami village in Koraput districts are left panic-stricken following death of as many as six persons in a fortnight. Moreover, nine other persons are also bedridden in the village with similar symptoms.

According to sources, patients who succumbed to the disease complained of fever, headache and cough.

“First, my wife got contracted with some disease and then it spread to my entire family. The situation is same everywhere in the village,” said a resident.

“Last week two persons who were suffering from fever could not be taken to a hospital due to unavailability of any vehicle or ambulance facilities,” complained another resident Laikhan Nirikh.

Meanwhile, doctors who have reviewed the situation in the area said there are no reasons to be worried since the deaths could be due to normal causes.

“There are no traces of Malaria from the blood reports of the patients. Besides, we had also distributed mosquito nets recently. Some of them died of old age while some due to other identifiable diseases like cancer,” a doctor of Nandpur CHC, Dhruba Charan Murmu said.
