Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Congress today announced formation of committees at the state, block and panchayat level for the ensuing panchayat polls scheduled in February next year.
Briefing media persons after presiding over the PCC Coordination Committee meeting, PCC president Prasad Harichandan said for the overall management of panchayat polls, campaigning and selection of candidates, Pradesh Panchayat Election Committee will be formed. To apprise the people of the manifesto of Congress, a manifesto committee will be formed at the state and block level.
He also said PCC will entrust senior leaders to supervise and monitor panchayat polls in each district while it will also appoint poll observers in each of the 314 blocks to supervise the poll process and support the Block Congress Committee. “For this purpose, PCC will convene a meeting of the Block Congress Committee presidents this month”, he pointed out.
Harichandan further said for management of panchayat polls, task force would be formed at the gram panchayat and block level while booth committee for each panchayat ward would be formed. The process of formation of the gram panchayat task force would be finalised very soon.
He said apart from this, the meeting also discussed about the ongoing Mahanadi row. “It was decided that the Congress would launch a Chetana Yatra in Sambalpur, Bargarh, Subarnapur, Boudh, Angul, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara districts in the first week of October after the conclusion of the monsoon session of the State Assembly and organise a public meeting in these districts against the BJD government in Odisha and the BJP government in Chhattisgarh”, he informed.
The PCC president said the party will stage a one-day demonstration in all Community Health Centres (CHCs) and Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in each block on September 19 to protest against the failure of the state government in providing proper health services to the poor and needy.
Present at the meeting, AICC member and Odisha in-charge BK Hariprasad urged the party MLAs to work in coordination with the PCC in the ensuing panchayat polls.
In the four-hour long meeting, some leaders suggested review of the poor show of Congress in the 2014 Assembly polls while some leaders urged the party leadership to find out the reasons for the successive defeat of the Congress in the Assembly polls since 2000.
