Bhubaneswar: Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday wrote to Union Minister of State, Tourism and Culture, Mahesh Sharma requesting him to send a team to identify a suitable place in the Barunei fort for establishment of a memorial to commemorate the Paika Rebellion.

He had earlier asked the Centre to erect the proposed national monument in collaboration with the State government at the Barunei Fort.

On July 20, the Government of India had organised a function at the Vigyan Bhawan to celebrate completion of 200 years of the Paika Rebellion.

The Centre has also decided to celebrate bicentenary of the Paika Rebellion throughout the year.

The Barunei Fort was the Paika Rebellion’s epicentre and the seat of power of the Gajapati King of Khurda.
