Bhubaneswar: Design of the proposed commemorative coin to mark the historic Paika rebellion has been sent for the approval of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Renowned graphic artist Gajendra Sahu has designed the commemorative coin, official sources said.

The senior artist of the graphics department at Bhubaneswar’s BK College running under the aegis of Government Arts and Crafts College had earlier designed Dronacharya and Arjuna Awards given by the Government of India.

A Committee head by Culture Secretary Manoranjan Panigrahi and other eminent personalities had earlier assigned Sahu to come up with the design for the commemorative coin.

The proposed design of the Paika rebellion commemorative coin will be sent to Government of India after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik approves it.

The Paika Rebellion was an armed uprising against the British East India Company's rule in Odisha in 1817 and the State government had earlier demanded for 'First War of Independence' tag for the revolt.
