Bhubaneswar: The opposition has targeted the State Government over amendment in Odisha Zilla Parishad Election Rules-1994. Leader of Opposition, Narasingha Mishra, raising this topic in the Odisha Assembly yesterday alleged, the government has amended the Zilla Parishad Election Rules in favour of the ruling party.

LoP Mishra termed it as illegal and therefore demanded that the Zilla Parishad elections should be declared null and void. Talking to media persons he said, "The amendment of the Zilla Parishad rules is illegal. According to the section 51 of the Zilla Parishad act, a notification should be published before amendment on which general public can submit their objections. Despite doing that, the government has amended the rule in a hurry in interest of the ruling party which is against the law."

Both BJD and BJP leaders have expressed their views on it outside the house.

BJP legislature party leader KV Singh Deo said, "What was the neccesity of the government to implement such a notification during the running session of the Odisha Assembly? They have not even tried to bring the topic into the house till date. The ruling party had declared this whip as it knew that there are chances of cross voting in their party."

BJD spokesperson Samir Ranjan Dash explained, "The bill had already been passed earlier and only the rules were framed. There is no chance of notification in this case as it had already became an act in the assembly and now only the rules were framed as per the law, no amendment has been done."

It may be mentioned that the State Government, on March 8, had amended section 51 of the Odisha Zilla Parishad Election Rules-1994. As per the amended rules, an authorised agent of each political party will be allowed to verify the ballot papers of the party members before they cast their votes.
