Cuttack: The State Institute of Open School (SIOS) examinations, conducted by the Board of Secondary Education (BSE) for the first time this year, began in Odisha on Monday.

A total of 2820 students appeared in the examinations at 17 centres in Angul, Puri, Ganjam, Mayurbhjanj, Cuttack, Kalahandi and Balangir districts.

To help these students, the Board, for the first time, has started SIOS programme from this year to allow Class VII dropout students and students who have failed in the High School Certificate (HSC) examinations, to appear in the High School Certificate (HSC) examinations.

Under the programme, candidates will have nine chances, twice a year, for five years to clear the HSC examinations.

This year, about 3200 students had applied for the examinations under this programme.
