Bhubaneswar: It seems that ‘fake placement’ controversy has adversely affected admissions into various engineering colleges as nearly 94 percent seats lie vacant even after completion of first phase of admissions.

Worried over the poor response from students towards engineering, the Odisha Private Engineering Colleges Association (OPECA) has now sought intervention of State Government to bail them out of the present crisis.

A delegation of OPECA on Monday met the Secretary of Technical Education to apprise about the situation and demanded to conduct the second Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE).

“The fake placement issue has certainly affected the admissions and we have appealed government to consider our demands. We have all sympathy for the affected students and we are also trying to convince students for admissions,” OPECA secretary Binod Dash.

However, the experts have also blamed lack of quality education behind the poor response of students towards engineering as second OJEE is now being held every year in Odisha for the last three years.

Out of the total 43,000 seats in 88 private and eight government colleges, only 8,151 seats have been allotted in the colleges in the State. There have been no takers for the BTech courses in at least eight colleges this time.

Sources said that over 400 students of ITER had fallen victims to the major fake placement racket which has now started to affect the admission process in the State.
