Online PG courses: UGC invites EoIs from educational institutions

Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has invited Expression of Interest (EoI) from the higher educational institutions across the country to develop its Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

The SWAYAM portal of the Government of India hosts MOOCs courses to enable students to virtually attend the courses taught by the best faculty and access high quality reading resources, especially in discussion forums, take tests and earn academic grades.

The government has identified eight National Coordinators from school to higher education level with UGC as the national coordinator for developing non-technology PG MOOCs from academic(s)/professional associated with universities/educational institutions.

UGC had earlier invited views/suggestions from all stakeholders including institutions, academia, students, industry and public at large regarding the PG courses for which MOOCs should be developed.

The details of the Courses are available below:-

1. Humanities & Social Sciences
2. Sciences
3. Performing Arts & allied subjects

UGC has now proposed to develop these MOOCs courses and invited EoI from higher education institutions and academicians to develop high quality MOOCs in these identified areas comparable to international standards, along with a sample video of about 5 minutes to be uploaded on YouTube giving brief description about the objectives and outlines of the course.

While submitting the expression of interest the following criteria shall be fulfilled:

• An academician/faculty having 10 years of PG teaching experiences in concerned field can be the course coordinator
• The Faculty employed in university/college would be required to submit the detailed proposal later along with a consent letter of the host University/Institute to develop MOOCs courses
• The courses, which carry credits/certification, shall be cleared by the ‘host university/institute’, who are authorised to award degrees as per section 22 of the UGC Act, 1956 and also agree to conduct ‘End Examination’, assessment and grant credits/certification
• One course coordinator can offer only one course at a time
• EoI can be invited for credit courses from course coordinator through recognised universities/institute of ‘National Importance’ and other educational Institutions authorized to award degrees/credits; and also from subject specialists both in public and private sectors for non-credit courses
