Bhubaneswar: In a span of just 10 days, the price of onion has doubled in Odisha, leaving the consumers in a state of panic.

While the government is claiming that it is taking all ameliorative measures to ensure availability of onion to consumers, onion price rise continues unabated.

“The steep increase in onion price has forced us to limit its use in kitchen, we have cut down on our consumption,” said a housewife Nirupama Panda.

Onion traders are also feeling the pinch of price rise. “People were usually buying 4-5 kg but now they have limited it to 1-2 kg,” said an onion seller Sujit Behera.

It is worth mentioning here that Odisha doesn’t produce enough onion to meet the demand of consumers here. So it usually imports from other neighbouring states. However, situation in the States like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh is also worse due to flood and low production.
