Nuapada: Dejected over crop loss, a farmer allegedly committed suicide in Nuapada district today. The farmer, identified as Aganu Rout of Jenjara village under Budhipali panchayat in the district, allegedly took the extreme step after sustaining  crop loss caused by pests and unseasonal rain.

According to sources, Rout had taken loans from money lenders and around Rs 50,000 from cooperative society to cultivate paddy in five acres of land. However, drought conditions and Brown plant hoppers (BPH) attack destroyed his crops.

Rout had been mentally disturbed due to the crop loss and loan burden and in the wee hours of Saturday, he reportedly committed suicide by hanging from a tree near his farm, said sources.

Meanwhile, locals demanded that the district be declared drought-hit as most farmers have been facing acute water scarcity owing to poor rainfall in the region.

Earlier this month a farmer of Lanji village under Khariar block had committed suicide by hanging himself after his standing crops in nearly five acres of land were destroyed. Similarly, in August, a farmer of Pandelbahali village under Komna block had allegedly committed suicide in a similar way.
