Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has decided to distribute free textbooks to students from Class 1 to Class 8 of Shishu Mandir Schools, managed by Bharatiya Siksha Vikash Sansthan, across the State. This move, effective from this year, will benefit nearly two lakh students of these schools.

The government has made the decision taking into account the outstanding performance of the students from these schools in the 10th board examinations over the past three years.

The government has already written to the director of the textbook production and marketing department for supply of books to the 1,037 such schools running in the State.

"The Bharatiya Siksha Vikash Sansthan is a registered educational charitable trust managing many schools in the State. So, we have decided to help them by providing free textbooks to students up to Class 8," said School & Mass Education Minister Badri Narayan Patro.

"We welcome the move of the government. It will help the students and encourage them to study as they were earlier facing problems due to unavailability of books in the market at the beginning of every academic session," said general secretary of the Bharatiya Siksha Vikash Sansthan.

Students are also happy with the decision of the government. "It will help us begin and complete the courses in time and secure good marks in exams," said a student.

Meanwhile, the district education officers will supervise the whole process of book distribution in the schools.
