Bhubaneswar: The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) has conferred Smart Policing Awards to the Odisha Police in two categories.

Dr RP Sharma, Director General-Cum-Director, Vigilance, representing the Odisha Police received two awards in the category of ‘Elderly Safety’ and ‘Women Safety’ for the innovative measures taken by him in the twin city Commissionerate Police in a in a function at New Delhi on Thursday last.

The awards were conferred in the following 10 different categories viz., Women Safety, Child Safety, Cyber Security, Road Safety, Traffic Management Solutions, Community Policing, Elderly Safety, Human Trafficking, Anti-insurgency and Other Policing Initiatives.

Altogether 91 nominations were received for the FICCI Smart Policing Awards and a Jury, chaired by GK Pillai, IAS (Retd) and former Union Home secretary, selected the best nominees.

Sharma made a presentation on Senior Citizens’ Security and enhancement of Women Safety and Security in the twin cities.

During his tenure as Commissioner of Police, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack, Sharma had taken several innovative measures for people-friendly policing.

He undertook several measures to enhance the security of senior citizens in the twin cities.

The Senior Citizens’ Security Cells were opened in all the Police Stations of the Commissionerate in which registration of 4436 senior citizens has been made by December 31, 2015. Officers of the rank of SIs/ASIs were designated as Nodal Officers to visit the registered senior citizens every month. Various prescribed forms for domestic help police verification, tenant verification etc. were made available on the Commissionerate Website as well as mobile application “Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police”.

Besides, Sharma had also organized periodical interactions with the senior citizens in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar and also provided other facilities like free health camps, First-Aid boxes, driving stickers, booklets on dos and don’ts and important telephone numbers’ directory etc.

The award in the category of “Women Security” was conferred to Odisha Police for the innovative measures taken by Sharma in the twin cities like introduction of women-friendly auto-rickshaw (Pink Auto), creating women support centre “Maadhyam” to provide counseling support and other services to women victims of violence, self-defence training to the girl students and working women, Android Mobile application “Mo Saathi”, special security measures for women’s private hostels and messes and various awareness programmes for women safety and security.

FICCI has prepared a ‘compendium’ of best practices in Smart Policing to share the same with relevant ministries/departments in the Central as well state governments and the police forces. The compendium was released in the award ceremony by the Union Minister of State, Home Affairs.
