Bhubaneswar: The School and Mass Education department is mulling introduction of board examinations in Class V and VII.

The department has already informed the Union Human Resources Ministry seeking permission to introduce the board examinations at primary and upper primary levels.

Debi Prasad Mishra, School and Mass Education Minister, said, “Our state’s view is that we should have board exams at fifth and seventh class. We have sent the response which we had formed on basis of inputs from parents and educationists.”

If the proposed system is introduced, schools run by the government will have one-type of question papers. Besides, pass or fail will be introduced in the proposed board exams, sources said.

Welcoming the proposed talks, Niranjan Panda, an educationist, said, “The good thing is that students will have an interest towards studies. At present, studies have become a fashion. Students are going to schools to have midday meal after which they come back home without attending classes. There is no punishment.”

“Students will have a practice and experience of board exams,” he added.

Across the State, 49,12, 000 students are studying at 58,158 primary and upper primary schools.
