Cuttack: Odisha DGP RP Sharma on Monday issued a stern warning to police officers facilitating registration of fake accident cases in connivance with fraudsters to defraud insurance companies.

The move comes in the wake of rising fraudulent insurance claims that have assumed serious proportions in Odisha.

After taking cognizance of the alarming trend, Sharma has directed all Superintendents of Police to take stringent action against those involved in the fraud.

"It is found that some unscrupulous elements and parties with vested interests like advocates, doctors, transport and police officials are working hand in glove in running such rackets of making false claims to obtain financial benefits," said a senior police official.

Official sources said the DGP has directed that a SDPO or DSP-rank officer will investigate the cases if there are any complaints against local police in this connection.

The Final Form of such cases shall be put up before SP, who shall go through all documents to satisfy himself that investigation and supervision of the case has been conducted in a fair and transparent manner.

If any police officer is found involved in the case, both legal and departmental action shall be taken against him.

Recently, Jyotiranjan Gouda, the then inspector-in-charge of Nemal police station under Cuttack rural police limits was suspended for showing undue favours to one Purnananda Sahu, owner of a mini truck by registering a fake accident case in February 2016.

An internal inquiry was also conducted by Odisha police in connection with registration of various accident cases under the Motor Vehicles Act by five police stations in Athgarh, Salepur, Mahanaga, Nemala and Banki in the last three years.
