Bhubaneswar: Serving people is on top of the list for Suman Sourav Mohanty and Avishyant Panda, the two Odias who have made it to the top 100 of the civil service exams. The future administrators have plans to work for the people of the state. Similarly, tribal youth Sunanda Jhoria who cracked the exams, dreams of development of tribal communities. All three however have one success mantra- to believe in your dream.
After engineering from a city based private college, both Suman and Avishyant had an experience of the corporate sector. Hailing from Kashipur in Koraput, Sunanda, an IIT Dhanbad alumnus, worked with Coal India for a while. While Suman was motivated by his mother to appear for the IAS exams, Avishyant, son of IAS officer Arun Panda was inspired by his father. An acquaintance Krushna Chandra guided Sunanda.
“My mother was the one who made me realise that I should become an administrator. She asked me to quit my job and my brother supported me for the coaching. But all the credit goes to my mother for always being there, guiding me and accompanying me during the exams too,” said Suman, son of an OAS officer. In fact, Suman, who has made it to the top 10 by emerging ninth in the IAS exams, had also secured rank 6 in OAS earlier and 413 rank in 2015 UPSC exams.

Avishyant said he wishes to ensure government policies are implemented properly and said a bureaucrat never succumb to political pressure.
The 91 rank holder said he has seen his father work as a bureaucrat and he doesn’t think administrators succumb to political pressure. Rather, he thinks there is a lot of freedom for policy implementation for IAS officers
Sunanda, who has secured rank 1064 said he will be a willing participant in bringing development to his region. “Now Kashipur is known for backwardness but in a decade or two it will be known for its prosperity,” he said.
All three have said focus is the key to crack the civil services. “Believing in your dream is the first step. Next is to work towards it. Quality and not quantity helps in preparing for the administrative services. Sitting with preparatory material for hours together does not matter but studying with focus for even two hours at a stretch will help,” said Suman.
I had bought the text books for preparation and did not opt for coaching but went for self study. But I always appeared for the tests at all institutes since I was staying in Delhi. Retention, self study and revision is the key

Sunanda says he had not joined any IAS coaching either since it is very costly, specially in Delhi. He collected the study material online. “I also contacted those who have qualified earlier to understand about optional subjects and other papers. But it took me three years since I could not get proper guidance. I would suggest those who can, must take coaching in Delhi,” he said.
