Notorious criminal nabbed after encounter in Berhampur

Berhampur: Continuing crackdown on criminals across Ganjam district, police has nabbed another hardcore criminal Santosh Gouda after a fierce encounter near New Baiganabadi Chhak under Sadar police limits here on Friday.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team was prepositioned near the Chhak after getting information of his arrival. On seeing the police, Santosh, a resident of Dakhinapur dropped his motorcyle and started firing at the police who also retaliated and subsequently he was injured in the exchange of fire.

Santosh sustained bullet injuries on both his legs and was admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.

Inspector Sibashankar Mohapatra and three other police personnel were also injured in the exchange of fire, sources said.

Following the encounter, police seized one country-made pistol, two round bullets and a bike from his possession.

Police sources informed that Santosh was involved in a double murder, several robbery and dacoity cases and there are more than 15 cases pending against him in different police stations.

“Notorious criminal Santosh Gouda from Dakhinapur was wanted in seven dacoity cases. We were finally able to nab him after failing several times. A police team led by IIC was prepositioned near Baiganabadi Chhak. Inspector Sibashankar Mohapatra, Sub-inspector Gobind Mohapatra and two constables have been injured,” said Ashok Kumar Mohanty, SDPO Berhampur Sadar.
