Jajpur: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) received a sigh of relief as it retained the post of Vyasanagar Municipality chairperson after the no-confidence motion against the civic body chief was rejected today in absence of required number of councillors.

"A 2/3 majority of the 26-member civic body was required for voting as per the guidelines. Only nine members of Congress turned up. So, the motion was rejected”, Kalinga Nagar ADM Abdul Alim Khan said.
The Congress had moved the no-confidence motion against the chairperson.

As the councillors, who had promised to cooperate with us, did not come for voting, the motion was rejected by the administration. "We sought the cooperation of all councillors in this regard. They had also promised before media to come forward. But, it was not happened", Congress councillor Bandita Parida said. Congress is always with the people and working for the development of the town, she added.

It was said that some disgruntled BJD members in league with Congress had moved the motion.

The BJD yesterday issued a whip asking all its councillors to abstain from voting to ensure victory of the party. The ruling party also warned of action against the whip violators.

BJD general secretary Debi Prasad Mishra yesterday convened a press meet in presence of Korei MLA Akash Das Nayak and Vyasanagar chairperson Sabita Rout and some councillors. He clarified that BJD in Vyasanagar is united and no councillors of the party will participate in the voting.

It was said that some disgruntled BJD members in league with Congress had brought the no-confidence motion against the chairperson last month.
