Anandpur: Nine councillors of Anandpur Municipality today brought a no-confidence motion against the chairperson Saraswati Jena.

Reports said the nine councillors met collector N Thirumala Nayak at his office and apprised him of their decision.

Of the nine councillors, five belong to BJD, two are from Congress and two Independents.

“The nine councillors met me today and gave a proposal for a no confidence motion against the chairperson. We will examine the proposal as per the law and Municipal rules after which we will fix a date,” the collector told media persons here.

Asked about the matter, Saraswati said she came to know about the incident today. “I don’t know the reason. I was with them and with their support I was elected as the chairperson. Besides, I did whatever the councillors wanted. Despite this, I don't know what went wrong that they met the collector and proposed a no trust motion against me,” she said.

As the Municipality has a total of 16 councillors, the no trust motion brought by nine councillors is ceraatin to pose a serious threat to the sitting chairperson, sources said.

It may be mentioned that the former vice chairperson of Anandpur Municipality Sandhyarani Behera had to relinquish her position after losing the no trust motion moved against her by 10 councillors. Twelve members in the 16-member civic body had voted against her during vote on the no trust motion on March 18 this year.
