‘No plastic element’ in rice which killed Sambalpur woman

Sambalpur: A week after the death of a woman allegedly due to consumption of plastic rice in Sambalpur, the administration today ruled out the presence of any plastic content.

Speaking to media, Pratap Rudra Mandal, Food Safety inspector said "All the six samples sent for lab testing had no trace of plastic in them. All the samples, including four taken from the spot and two others seized by the police, proved genuine."

According to sources out of the six samples, five were uncooked rice samples and another sample of cooked food was collected from the house of the deceased and supplier’s godown.

On October 5, Chandana Mahato, a resident of Chandan Nagar area under Khetrajpur police limits in the city complained of stomach pain followed by fever, vomiting and headache after consuming meals. She was admitted to medicine ward of Burtla hospital and was shifted to ICU when her condition worsened. She died on October 6.

In a complaint, her kin alleged that the rice packet that they brought from a godown on October 4 had plastic in it which led to Chandana’s death.

After reports, police raided the suspected godown and launched a probe into the incident.
