Cuttack: Police today cracked the murder case of Nirjara Behera of Choudwar by arresting the key accused, identified as Sambit Senapati, from Cuttack today.

Police said the crime was a fall out of an illicit relationship of the accused with his sister-in-law who was scheduled to get married to Nirjara.

Police were able to get their hands on the accused after tracking his call details. The intimate chats of Senapati with his sister-in-law also provided a major lead in the case, police said.

According to police Senapati had been in a relationship with his sister-in-law. After her marriage was fixed with Nirjara, he allegedly threatened Nirjara not to marry her. As Nirjara didn't pay any heed, Senapati hatched a plan to eliminate him.

"Marriage of his sister-in-law with Nirjara became intolerable for him. Personal enmity had grown between the two gradually. Finally Senapati planned to eliminate Nirjara," ACP Trinath Mishra said.

As per the plan, he called Nirjara over phone to Birupa River Bridge on January 7 and hacked him to death. His body was found with multiple injury marks under the bridge. The incident took place only two days before Nirjara’s wedding.

Jagatpur police had registered a case after father of the deceased, Kamal Kumar Behera, lodged a complaint alleging that it was a pre-planned murder.

Police had constituted two teams to nab the accused.
