Niali: The mystery surrounding the deaths of sheep in Odisha is yet to die down with deaths of five more sheep being reported from Niali in Cuttack district on Sunday.

As per reports, the ‘mysterious animal’ killed five more sheep and injured one in Kanpur village under Pokhari panchayat late Saturday night.

The killing of sheep by some unknown animals has been in news since last couple of months. Besides Niali, cases of sheep deaths were also reported from Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada and Kendrapara districts.

Recently, an expert team of Wildlife Institute of India (WII) visited Niali and other parts in the State where similar incidents of sheep deaths were reported and examined things like the killing pattern and pug marks of the ‘mysterious animal’ from ground zero. Later, the team mentioned wolves, foxes and hyenas to be the predators responsible for the mass killing of sheep.

However, all the efforts of the forest department, the Nandankanan Zoo and Similipal National Park experts to trap the predator have failed to yield results so far.

Meanwhile, sources said that government is likely to provide compensation to all the sheep farmers within one month.
