Bhawanipatna: A newly married woman was allegedly burnt to death by her in-laws in Shaktinagar Pada here on Saturday. The incident came to light on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Priyadarshani Mahapatra. Sources said an altercation occurred between Priyadarshani and her husband Ajay over some trivial issue on Saturday. In a fit of rage, the in-laws of Priyadarshani allegedly burnt her to death after pouring kerosene on her body.

Later, police seized the dead body and started an investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, the cops have detained Ajay, the husband of the deceased, for interrogation.
As per a complaint lodged by the deceased’s mother Biprabhasini Mahapatra, Priyadarshani had married two years ago. Her in-laws had been torturing her for dowry after the marriage. On Saturday, they strangulated her to death and later set her ablaze.

Bhawanipatna Town police station officer Surendranai Satpathy said as per the complaint the in-laws of Priyadarshani had been demanding a bike and some money as dowry and an altercation occurred on Saturday due to the same reason. However, Ajay’s sister-in-law Chinmayee Mahapatra refuted the allegation saying that is a case of suicide.
