Cuttack: A newborn girl, dumped in a garbage heap at Nua Sahi under Bidanasi police limits in Cuttack, was rescued by locals on Saturday.

According to police, a local resident named Bachani Behera spotted the newborn near the garbage dump and rescued her. Later, police and Childline officials were alerted, who rushed to the spot and took the infant.

The newborn, who is believed to be one-day-old, was shifted to Basundhara orphanage.

On the other hand, the woman who rescued the infant from the dump yard expressed interest to adopt her. "We wanted to adopt the newborn girl. But, Childline has handed her over to the orphanage," Gobinda Behera, husband of the woman said.

Childline officials said the infant needs special health care now. "We are consulting doctors to examine her health as she needs special attention. The woman who rescued the child wanted to adopt her, but we have to go by the guidelines under Juvenile Justice Act," said Niranjali Das, Childline member.
