Jajpur: In yet another instance of discrimination against girl child, a newborn girl was left to die after being buried alive in a field in Jajpur district.

The newborn girl was rescued after a local villager spotted her feet and a 17-year youth pulled her out of the ground with the help of others at around 9: 30 am on Saturday.

It is suspected that the newborn girl has been abandoned by her own parents.

“It was a small kid who first saw the feet of the child buried under a compost dump in a field. Later, we rushed to the spot and rescued the newborn girl,” said Alok Rout, an eye-witness.

According to Rout, the newborn girl was buried alive while her face was covered with a piece of cloth. The child’s umbilical cord was intact, he added.

Following the incident, the tiny tot was handed over to ASHA worker and later has been admitted to Dharmasala hospital in a critical condition.

The doctor treating the child, Chintamani Mishra, said, “The condition of the girl is now stable, she has been admitted at the baby ward and I have also informed the District Child Protection Officer and CWC.”

Later, the CWC took custody of the infant. It said the infant will be treated in Jajpur district hospital for now.
