Puri: Tension ran high at a private nursing home in Puri today after the death of a newborn due to alleged medical negligence.

As per the complaint, Sangeeta Pradhan, a pregnant woman of Kalikadebi Sahi was taken to the Puri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) after she developed labour pain. But she was referred to another hospital as there were no anesthesia doctors in the DHH. The family members later admitted Sangeeta to Sibanand Nursing Home, where she delivered a baby boy. However, the newborn boy died after three days at the nursing home as he was allegedly not given proper treatment by doctors since there was no pediatric doctor at the hospital.

The family members demanded an investigation into the matter and action against the nursing home. Besides, some locals staged a demonstration in front of the office of the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO). Meanwhile, the CDMO ordered a probe into the incident.

"I have ordered an inquiry into the matter and would take steps to seal the nursing home," said CDMO Bijan Mohanty.
