Jajpur: A newborn girl was found abandoned beside a road near Suasahi under Kuakhia police limits in Jajpur district Monday evening. The child, barely a few hours old, was spotted by a local woman who was passing by and heard the infant cry .

"The infant was wrapped in cloth and crying inconsolably," said the woman Banita Mallik who rescued the child and took her home. "As soon as I removed the cloth from her face, the little one looked at me and stretched its arms as if asking me to hold her," said Banita .

The baby is stable now and having milk, she informed. Banita's family appeared happy to receive the newborn.

"My mother-in-law rescued the baby and we are all happy to have a new member in the family. We will together take care of the child. I do not have words for those who abandoned the infant ," said Sanju Mallik, Banita's daughter-in-law.

Earlier, on March 22, another newborn girl was rescued by police near Siliamunda village at Pallahara in Angul district. Some locals had spotted the baby lying near a pond and informed the police. Later, the custody of the baby was given to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).
