Bhubaneswar: The Nandankanan Zoo authorities are now upbeat to welcome a new member after Sloth bear 'Liza' gave birth to a cub inside the bear safari today.

As Liza was last spotted with her newborn, the authorities have decided to close the bear safari for visitors from tomorrow onwards for the safety and security of both the mother and cub.

"As the mother sloth bear was spotted near her cub, we have decided to close the safari from tomorrow," said a senior zoo official.

The bear population in Nandankanan is 15 including 10 males, 5 females apart from the new cub.

The bear safari that has been set up in an area of 4.1 hectares in Nandanakan was inaugurated in 2012. Since then, the safari has been one of the key attractions for the visitors coming to the zoo.

The zoo authorities have also decided to waive Rs 10 off the ticket price of Rs 50 on account of their decision to close the bear safari.

The zoo also has a lion safari, which was set up in 1984 in 20 hectares, a white tiger safari and a herbivore safari.
