Angul: Protesting Centre's disinvestment plan, National Aluminium Company Ltd (Nalco) employees today launched a 24-hour strike bringing the operations to a grinding halt.

The operations at smelter plant and the captive power plant of profit-making Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) have been virtually paralysed as workers, engineers and executives belonging to different unions of the company staged dharna here at the plant site under the banner of Nalco Employees Coordination Committee.

"We strongly condemn Central government's plan of disinvestment. We urge the company higher officials to stay away from Centre's plan failing which they would also land in trouble", a striking staff, Ashutosh Rath, said.

The Central government has made 10 per cent divestment from Nalco on April 17, 2017. “Following sale of the share, the government’s stake in Nalco will fall to 65 per cent. We demand immediate withdrawal of such decision. The agitation will be intensified if our demands are not fulfilled", said Mangilal Samal, another employee.
